3/16" bubbles — the trade-grade size. Smaller bubbles wrap closer to fragile contours; larger bubbles bounce force off the item instead of absorbing it.

12" width is the goldilocks size for plates, picture frames, electronics, and small art — wraps fully in two passes for most items.

Bubbles face in

Wrap with the bubble side touching the item, smooth side facing out. The bubbles cradle the contours; the smooth side takes the impact.

Two passes for fragile, three for irreplaceable

One pass cushions; two passes protects; three passes is for items where you'd cry if they broke. Tape every layer.

Don't reuse old bubble wrap on glass

Pre-popped bubbles have already absorbed an impact. Use fresh wrap for glass and electronics; recycle the popped stuff for soft items.

Bubble wrap or packing paper?

Both. Paper for filling gaps and wrapping non-fragile items in bulk; bubble wrap for fragile-specific cushioning. Combine them — pad the bottom of the box with paper, wrap fragile items in bubble.
